About AilumAilum is a small town that belongs to Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at a distance of 21 km from the district headquarters Shamli, 522 km away from the Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow and 83 km away from the national capital Delhi. Hindi is the most spoken language of the town. This area was formerly under Muzaffarnagar district and in 2011 Shamli district was partitioned from Muzaffarnagar district covering Ailum within its boundary. Agriculture is the main occupation of the locals here. Hindus and Muslims form the majority of the total population in the town apart from Jains, Sikhs and Christians. Ailum is successful in green revolution. West Azad Nagar is one of the popular localities in Ailum.
History of AilumThe historical town has a prominent placed in the Indian freedom struggle in 1857 as these regions of Uttar Pradesh witnessed the battles of Panipat. The town was also the hiding spot for King Bahu who was defeated in third battle of Panipat. The King committed suicide in Ailum and the locals in the town buried his body in the town itself under a peepal tree, this location was known as Bahu ka Mahal. Due to lack of maintenance Bahu ka Mahal was totally destroyed at nineteenth century.
Geography of AilumThe town is elevated at a height of 238 meters above sea level and has its coordinates at 29° 17' 16 North latitude and 77° 17' 30 East longitude. The city lies close to the banks of River Yamuna and it lies in fertile Doab region. The town is surrounded by Kandhala Rural, Taharpur Bhabisa, Islampur Ghasauli, Asara and Kakripur. The cities nearby the town are Shamli, Samalkha, Sardhana and Ganaur. The taluks nearby Ailum are Kandhla, Budhana, Chhaprauli and Kairana. The districts that are close to the town are Panipat, Baghpat, Muzzaffarnagar and Sonipat. The villages close to the town are Hariya Khera, Kaniyan, Bharsi, Dangrol and Biral. The town lies close to the borders of Baghpat district and Muzzafarnagar district. Summers are hot and winters are cool in Ailum.
Administration in AilumThe town operates under Saharanpur division of state administration and it is a nagar panchayat. In 1995 Ailum was announced as a town and a Nagar Panchayat was established. The nagar panchayat is sub divided many wards from which an elected representative is selected every 5 years and from the ward member a chairman is selected. Rajbir Singh was the first chairman of Ailum Nagar Panchayat in 1995. The current chairman of the panchayat is Udaiveer Singh Pawar elected in 2012.
Notable Personalities of AilumAilum town is the home of popular poets like Shamsher Bahadur Singh, national poet Vishrant Vasisth and Rajendra Rajan. Shamsher Bahadur Singh was praised as poet’s poet by Sachidananda Heeranand Vatsysyan Ajnyaiy. Poet Vishrant Vasisth established research institution named Raghuveer Saudh Sansthan for scholars of Hindi literature. He was also the editor of Samvad Vimarsh, a weekly newspaper, and wrote nearly 50 books.
